Help Fix Windows Replicated File System Error
Recommended: ASR Pro
Over the past week, some readers have reported experiencing duplicate file system windows. DFSR is a service that allows you to replicate folders, including DFS namespace paths, to multiple servers in websites. It is a replication technology that uses multi-master replication. They can be different for each server. In addition, replicated folders do not have to be in a specific DFS namespace.
The Distributed File System (DFS) functionality naturally offers the ability to group shared resources across multiple servers and therefore transparently bundle shared resources in a great single hierarchical namespace. DFS organizes network shares in a tree structure. Each DFS points to one or more recommended folders on the network.
Applies to: Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008
DFS Replication is a Windows Server service that allows you to efficiently replicate directories (including those pointed to by a DFS namespace path) to multiple servers or locations. DFS Replicationis an efficient multi-master copy mechanism that can be used in synchronized folders between companies over network connections with limited bandwidth. It replaces File Replication Service (FRS) as the replication engine for DFS namespaces, and copies the Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) SYSVOL folder to domains that can use Windows Server 2008 or even later functional scope.
DFS Replication will use a compression algorithm knownThis is known as Remote Differential Compression (RDC). RDC detects differences between the data in this file and allows DFS Replication to repeat only changed blocks of files, preferably instead of the entire file.
For more information on SYSVOL Replication using DFS Replication, see Migrating Sysvol Replication as a DFS Replication Environment .
To use DFS Replication, you need to create replication groups and move replicated folders to groups. Replication groups, replicas, and folders whose members are typically shown in the following figure.
This number indicates that a replication group is a group of servers known to be members that participate in writes to one or more replicated folders. Replicated folder a is a file that remains in sync for every employee. The illustration shows the folders reproduced in step 2: and project proposals. As the data in each repeating folder changes, the changes become replicated connectors between members of all replication groups. Most Participants between links make up the replication topology.Creating multiple replicated folders in the same processing group simplifies the process of implementing replicated folders because the topology, provisioning, and bandwidth throttling for the group whose identities are impersonated are applied to each folder. Deploy the additional replicated version, use Dfsradmin.exe or follow the instructions in the wizard to set the local path with permissions to the new replicated folder.
What replaced DFS?
SureSync is more than capable of replacing the copy / sync portion of the real DFS and adding value with several related features that simplify the IT department.
Each replicated folder has unique settings, making it a file and subfolder filter so that you can filter different files and subfolders on the Internet for each cloned folder.
Replicated folders stored on each individual member can be on different volumes within a member, and not all replicated folders need to be a shared folder or namespace. However, managing DFS snap-ins makes it easy to distribute replicated folders and, if necessary, publish them to an existing namespace.
You can refuset DFS Replication using DFS. Administrative, DfsrAdmin, and Dfsrdiag commands, optional scripts that invoke WMI.
Requirements
Before you can further deploy DFS Replication, you must change your servers as follows:
- Update the Active Directory Domain (AD Services DS) schema to include schema suffixes for Windows Server 2003 R2 or later. You are not using read-only replicated folders with this earlier version of Windows Server 2003 R2 or with schema add-ins only.
- Make sure all replication servers are in the same forest. They just don’t allow replication between servers in different forests.
- Install DFS Replication on all providers that are members of a strong replication group.
- Check with your antivirus software vendor to ensure that your DFS antivirus is replication-compatible.
- Find almost any folder you want to back up to NTFS formatted volumes. DFS Replication may not support Resilient File System (ReFS) orFAT system. DFS Replication also does not replicate service content stored on Cluster Shared Volumes.

Using DFS Replication in a VM in Azure has been tested with Windows Server. However, there are some restrictions and after that you must comply with the requirements.
- Using images or saved states to restore the health of a server running DFS Replication to copy anything other than the DFS SYSVOL folder will prevent replication from starting, which is special and requires database recovery measures. Likewise, do not virtual export, clone, or back up machines. Other documents can be found in article 2517913 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base and in article Safely Virtualize DFSR . Backup
- If data is loaded via a replicated folder in a real virtual machine, you must use additional software on each guest server.
- DFS Replication requires access to a specific physical Or a virtualized domain controller that cannot communicate directly with Azure AD.
- DFS requires a VPN connection to replicate around your on-premises replication team workers and all members hosted in Azure VMs. You must also configure your local router (for example, in the Forefront Threat Management Gateway role) so that the RPC endpoint mapper (port 135) can traverse the VPN connection in addition to the randomly assigned port in the middle: 49152 and 65535. You can use the Set- cmdlet DfsrMachineConfiguration or the Dfsrdiag command line tool to specify a good static port rather than randomly specifying the exact port. For more information on specifying a static port for DFS Replication, see Set-DfsrServiceConfiguration . For a selection of information about the associated ports to be open when administering Windows Server, see article In 832017 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Install DFS Replication
What is DFS and FRS?
DFS Replication is new to FRS and can be used to actually replicate SYSVOL content, DFS folders, and other legacy data (not SYSVOL). Move all setNon-SYSVOL FRS Replicas to DFS Replication.
ReplDFS location was part of the file and storage services role. The administration tools type for DFS (DFS Administration, DFS Replication Plug-in Set for Windows PowerShell, and Command Line Tools) is installed separately as part of Remote Server Administration Tools.
Set up replication using Windows Admin Center , Server Manager, and / or PowerShell, as described in the following sections to the right.
How To Install DFS With A Manager
-
Open Server Manager, click Manage, and then click Add Roles and Features. The Add Roles and Features Wizard appears.
-
What replaces DFS?
Summary. Azure File Sync is more than capable of changing some of DFS-R replication / sync while adding value with several key features that make IT easier for the most part.
In the server list, select the Internet, server, or virtual hard disk (VHD) of the offline virtual appliance on which you want to install DFS.
-
What is DFS and how it works?
Distributed File System (DFS) features provide the ability to logically place shared resources across multiple servers and transparently bundle shared resources into a single, ordered namespace. DFS organizes shared resources on a “network” in a tree structure.
Select the role services features you want to install.
-
To configure the DFS Replication service on the Select Server Role page, DFS Replication.
-
To install only the DFS Management Tools, on the Features page, expand Remote Server Management Tools, expand Management Tools As roles, expand File Services Tools, and then select DFS Management Tools.
The DFS Management Tools will install the DFS Management snap-in, these DFS Replication and DFS module namespaces for Windows PowerShell, and the command line building blocks, but some DFS services will not be installed on the server.

The main purpose of a Distributed File System (DFS) is undoubtedly to allow users of physical broadcast systems to share their data, but their resources, using a common file system.A lil system. What is the difference between FRS and DFSR?
These two tactics replicate the SYSVOL folder between the realm controllers, but they do it in very different ways. First, FRS can simply replicate entire files, unlike DFSR, replicating changes at the chunk level. FRS is in auto repair mode at Microsoft with no new features added.
